William H. Gunther III
WHG3
About MeWilliam (Bill) Gunther III has been in the mail processing business since 1976. He started his career with GBR in Chester CT. Some of the roles he had were in the production, service and sales for the company. GBR was a manufacturer of mailing equipment for direct mail, traveler’s checks and coupon book machines. His last role in the company was Product Manager for the Comp-u-Mailer system. He left in 1981 to start Gunther International with his father, William H. Gunther Jr.
Bill was with Gunther International for almost 20 years. Gunther International focused on the insurance market and designed and manufactured complex policy assembly systems. Gunther was also the first company to use bar codes to track documents and control the mailing systems. Up until then, the only codes in the industry were OMR codes. Gunther also introduced the first 2D code in the mail processing market. Up until 1992, Bill was responsible for sales and placed systems at many of the top insurance companies in the US. Some of the major insurance companies still use these systems today. They included companies such as Aetna, Travelers, Chubb, Metropolitan Life, CNA, Allstate, AFLAC, and Liberty Mutual (just to mention a few). In 1992 Bill took the company public with the help of Harold Geneen, the past CEO of ITT, and Bill became President. His last major role before leaving the company in 2000 was to start the inc. jet division. This division designed and built one of the first ink jet printers for the mailing industries using the HP 45 series cartridge. This division not only sold printers but the ink as well, which generated a long, term consumable for the company. Today the inc. jet division is one of the most profitable divisions for Gunther. The inc. jet division also was the first supplier of this technology to encourage HP to design color and invisible inks for the mailing market.
In 2000 Bill moved his family to Rochester NY and took a job with Videk. Videk is a spin-off of Kodak and designs and builds camera systems. Videk wanted to focus its resources in the print and mail markets. Most all of Videk’s sales were through OEM channels. Some of the major users were IBM, Oce and Pitney Bowes. One of the largest end users of the Videk Print Verification System is the US Treasury. Every check that is printed is verified by this system for accuracy and quality. The five years spent with Videk gave Bill a better knowledge of the vision industry that has been invaluable.
Bill then spent one year with inTelmail before deciding to start his own consulting business.
